1. W.A.T.C.H Release Top 10 Summer Safety Report

W.A.T.C.H (World Against Toys Causing Harm) released a list of the top ten toys and activities that could cause our children harm this Summer. Included on the list are things like Bounce Houses and backyard trampolines which cause tens of thousands of injuries.

2. 19 Children Killed, Injured By Firearms Every Day

A recent study has found that guns kill or injure at least 19 children a day in America. Most at risk were children from the African-American community. The report was undertaken by the CDCP (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) and was published in the journal “Pediatrics”.

3. Gun Safety Programs Won’t Save Your Child, But This Question Might

Forbes had an interesting article to mark “National Ask Day”, which encourages parents to ask if a gun is present in a place there child will be, and how it is stored. The article discusses how this question is more effective than gun safety programs and is a good read.

4. Mum Ticketed For Calling 911 When Wind Traps Kid in Car

A mother in Omaha, Nebraska frantically called 911 for assistance when win blew her car door shut and trapped an 1 year-old inside a hot SUV. The panicked mom was then ticketed for “Suspicion of child abuse by neglect”.

5. Snapchat Update Raises Safety Worries

An update to Snapchat that shows where posts were made on a searchable map has got parents raising serious concerns. It’s location-sharing features lets people know exactly where you are, which building you’re in and your whereabouts in the building.

6. Teacher Arrested For Molesting Multiple Kids in Classroom

A teacher in a Downtown Los Angeles Elementary school has allegedly molested at least 6 girls in the classroom. The number is expected to rise as he has worked at the school for a number of years, leaving parents to question how he could get away with it for so long.

7. New Study Maps Out Core Concepts In The Vaccination Debate

Virigina Tech had an interesting article how the recent measles outbreak was caused by vaccination skeptic parents. Scientists at the College have launched a 3-year study to investigate the ways online interactions affect our beliefs.

8. Playground Slide Mysteriously Explodes & Injures Child

A playground slide mysteriously “exploded” in West Ellis, WI and caused 2nd-degree burns to child. As yet, no explanation has been provided and foul play is not suspected. There are thousands of these particular slides installed in playgrounds across America.

9. Child’s Deadly Fall On Oahu Prompts National Safety Initiative

Following a 2011 death of a child who fell from a window in Oahu, new national legislation has been passed to make military homes safer for kids. Toddlers falling from windows is a problem everywhere, but particularly in Hawaii where parents open windows in summer. It’s estimated 80 children fall from windows in Hawaii alone every year.

In a “slightly” less-serious post, babygaga.com compiled 12 really strange methods that parents took to disciplining their children, including snake bites, making them wear diapers to school and getting some quite disturbing haircuts.

Recalls

There was one big recall this week.

Britax Recalls 200,000 B-Safe Seat Clips

Leading child seat manufacturer recalled 200,000 of its “B-Safe Clips” after it was learned they caused a choking hazard.

Lines affected include the B-Safe 35, B-Safe 35 Elite, BOB B-Safe 35 Infant Seat and all related Travel Systems. The recall affects products manufactured between November 2015 and May 2017.
